Hand-shaped from banana fibre

TUMBAK is crafted in a small family business specialising in traditional weaving.

The sturdy banana fibres are hand-woven around a metal frame. This frame gives the vase its characteristic, tall shape and ensures it remains sturdy and shapely.

The weaving is then finished with lighter raffia fibres. These subtle details provide extra contrast and give TUMBAK its recognisable look.

Each vase is individually handmade. Small differences in colour, structure, shape, and finish are therefore possible and are part of the artisanal character of the product.

From banana plant to natural fibre

Banana fibres come from the layered stems of banana plants used for agriculture.

According to Soeji, old, dying banana plants are used for this purpose. The fibres are thus given a new purpose as a strong natural raw material for handmade home accessories.

After collection, the fibres are dried in the sun for approximately one week. During this natural drying process, the characteristic warm brown colour develops.

Subsequently, the individual fibre strips are rolled into sturdy strands of about 6 mm thick. These are then processed by experienced artisans.

TUMBAK is handmade on Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it collaborates with local production partners who pay attention to fair wages and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. As much of the work is done by hand, relatively little machine production is needed.
