Hand-Embroidered Star Pattern

The base of ADARI consists of sturdy banana fibers woven by hand around a frame of thin metal rods.

The frame ensures that the wall decoration maintains its stable round shape.

Then, the refined white star pattern is hand-applied with a needle and cotton thread. It is precisely this contrast between the darker natural fiber and the light cotton that gives ADARI its recognizable appearance.

According to Soeji, it takes an average of about two hours of handwork to produce one wall decoration.

From Banana Plant to Natural Fiber

Banana fiber is a natural plant fiber derived from banana plants widely cultivated in Indonesia.

The fibrous outer layer detaches from the trunk during growth and is collected. The fibers are then dried in the sun for approximately one week, which naturally creates the warm, intense brown color.

After drying, the individual fiber strips are rolled into sturdy strands about 6 mm thick.

These strands are then processed by experienced artisans into traditional wickerwork.

Handmade in Java

ADARI is handcrafted in Central Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it collaborates with small-scale family businesses of a maximum of about 20 to 30 employees. In the selection of production partners, attention is paid to fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours.

The products are made by adult and experienced artisans. This also allows older craftsmen who can no longer work in agriculture to continue to use their traditional skills and pass them on to the next generation.

Because almost all production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Each ADARI is made individually. Small differences in color, texture, shape, and dimensions are therefore possible and are part of the artisanal character of the product.
