Special weave of flattened rattan

For MALUKA, a special type of rattan is used.

The rattan fibers are first flattened and then carefully hand-woven into a sturdy metal frame. According to Soeji, this process is exclusively used for this model within their collection.

The flat fibers create an airy and refined woven pattern that lets a lot of light through. This keeps the lampshade light in appearance, while the metal frame provides sturdiness and shape retention.

The story behind rattan

Rattan is a fast-growing plant-based raw material found in tropical forests.

According to Soeji, rattan grows very abundantly in some areas. The stems can be harvested regularly and, after drying, processed into material for furniture, baskets, and lampshades, among other things.

The material is naturally strong, yet flexible enough to be shaped and woven using traditional techniques.

Handmade in Bali

MALUKA is handmade in Bali, Indonesia.

Experienced artisans carefully weave the flattened rattan fibers into the metal frame until the characteristic bell shape and airy pattern emerge.

Soeji states that they work with local production partners who prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. The products are manufactured by adult and experienced craftsmen.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Since many steps are performed by hand, relatively little machine production is needed.

Due to manual manufacturing and the use of natural materials, small differences in color, structure, shape, and dimensions may occur. These variations are part of MALUKA's artisanal character.
