The integrated handles are made of flexible jute and make it easy to move the basket from one room to another.

Despite its robust construction, the basket remains relatively light and therefore pleasant for daily use.

The story behind rattan

Rattan is a rapidly renewable plant raw material from rattan palms that grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia.

According to Soeji, the stems and branches are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried.

Different parts of the rattan can then be used for various applications. The inside of the stems is processed into furniture, baskets, and lamps, among other things, while the outer bark can be cut into fine strips for intricate weaving.

Rattan palms need a healthy forest ecosystem to grow well. According to Soeji, the use of rattan can therefore contribute to making the conservation of natural forests economically attractive.

Traditional craftsmanship

OTERE is handcrafted on Java, Indonesia.

To make the basket, the rattan fibers are first made flexible with the help of heat. This allows experienced craftsmen to carefully shape the material into OTERE's round form.

Each basket is individually handcrafted. Small differences in color, texture, shape, and dimensions are therefore possible and are part of the natural and artisanal character of the product.

Artisanally produced in Java

Soeji works, according to its own statement, with small family businesses of a maximum of about 20 to 30 employees.

When selecting production partners, attention is paid to fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

Older craftsmen who can no longer work in agriculture can also continue to use and pass on their traditional skills to the next generation within these companies.

Because many production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine production is required.
