The Traditional Kawung Pattern

These are hand-woven into the traditional Kawung pattern. The graphic design creates a beautiful contrast with the natural texture of the banana fibers and gives each basket a recognizable character.

Because the pattern and weaving are entirely done by hand, no two PURA baskets are exactly alike.

From Banana Plant to Handmade Basket

PURA uses fibers sourced from the layered stems of banana trees.

According to Soeji, only old, dying banana trees are used for this purpose. The fibers are thus given a second life as a sturdy natural raw material for handmade home accessories.

After harvesting, the fibers are sun-dried for approximately one week. During this natural drying process, the characteristic warm, deep brown color develops.

Subsequently, the individual strips are rolled into strong strands of about 6 mm thick. These are then handcrafted by experienced artisans into the round shape of the basket.

PURA is handcrafted in Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it collaborates with local production partners who prioritize fair wages and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many steps are performed entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Due to the use of natural materials and manual manufacturing, slight differences in color, shape, texture, and dimensions may occur. These subtle variations are part of the artisanal character and make each PURA unique.
