Hand-woven bamboo with a light distressed look

The base of BENOA is made from sturdy bamboo, hand-woven into its round shape by experienced artisans.

The bamboo then receives a white distressed finish. This allows the material's natural texture to remain visible and gives the basket a soft, slightly weathered appearance.

The top is finished with seagrass and jute handles, further emphasizing the basket's natural character.

Each BENOA is individually handcrafted. Small variations in color, texture, shape, and finish are therefore possible, making each piece unique.

The story behind bamboo

Bamboo is an exceptionally fast-growing plant-based raw material that can be used for a wide range of applications.

According to Soeji, the bamboo for these baskets is harvested in the immediate vicinity of the processing facility. This limits the transportation distances between harvesting and processing.

After harvesting, the bamboo is prepared and processed into strong, flexible sections which are then hand-woven into the basket.

Handmade in Java

BENOA is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it collaborates with local production partners who prioritize fair wages and good working conditions. The products are manufactured by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. As much of the work is done entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.
