The story behind Trembesi

Trembesi, also known as rain tree, is a fast-growing tree commonly found in Indonesia.

Originating from South America, the tree is widely planted in urban areas in Indonesia, for example along roads and in parks. To control the strong growth of the trees, the sprawling branches are regularly pruned.

According to Soeji, this liberated wood is reused, among other things, for the production of furniture.

Trembesi has a warm color and a distinctive natural wood grain that somewhat resembles teak in appearance. Each stool thus acquires its own nuances in color and pattern.

From wood to finished stool

SUBANG is crafted in the workshops of experienced carpenters in Central Java, Indonesia.

The Trembesi wood is first dried and then sawn into planks. Subsequently, the individual parts for the legs and frame are shaped, assembled, and carefully sanded.

Then, the wood is finished, and the hand-woven rattan seat is incorporated into the frame. The seat is crafted by artisans specializing in traditional weaving.

Thus, woodworking and weaving come together in one entirely handmade piece of furniture.

Artisanally made in Java

Soeji states that it collaborates with small-scale family businesses employing a maximum of approximately 20 to 30 people.

In selecting production partners, attention is paid to fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

In this way, older craftsmen who can no longer work in agriculture can continue to use their traditional skills and pass them on to the next generation.

Because many production steps are performed by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Each SUBANG is made individually. Small differences in color, wood grain, shape, and finish are therefore possible and are part of the natural and handmade character of the product.
