From plant to hand-woven basket

The material traditionally called seagrass for these baskets is, according to Soeji, not actually an underwater plant.

It is a small, palm-like plant common in sandy coastal areas in tropical Asia. The leaves are harvested, separated, and then cut into long strips.

Then the fibers are dried and hand-processed into the weaving material from which MASILA is made.

The natural fibers retain their warm color and visible texture, making each basket look slightly different.

Handmade in Java

MASILA is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it works with local production partners who pay attention to fair wages and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because much of the work is done entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Due to the use of natural materials and the handmade production process, small differences in color, shape, and dimensions may occur. These variations are part of MASILA's artisanal character and make each basket unique.
