From aquatic plant to hand-woven basket

Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on lakes and rivers.

The plant originated in South America but has also spread across Southeast Asia. There, water hyacinth can multiply very quickly and cover large parts of the water surface.

This makes it harder for light and oxygen to reach the water. The plants are therefore regularly removed.

After harvesting, the leaves are cut off, and the sturdy stems are dried in the tropical sun for approximately three to seven days.

During this natural drying process, the warm, rich color of the material also develops. The dried stems then form a sturdy plant-based raw material that can be hand-processed into baskets and other wickerwork.

Soeji states that it works with local production partners who prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. The products are manufactured by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, the water hyacinth is not chemically treated, and no harmful chemicals are used in the production process.

Because many steps are performed entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Each AMAN is made individually. Small differences in color, shape, structure, and dimensions are therefore possible and are part of the natural and handcrafted character of the product.
