From aquatic plant to hand-woven basket

Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows in lakes and rivers.

The plant is originally from South America but has also spread throughout Southeast Asia. There, water hyacinth can multiply very quickly and cover large parts of the water surface.

This can reduce light and oxygen levels in the water. The plants are therefore regularly removed.

After harvesting, the leaves are cut off, and the sturdy stems are dried in the sun for approximately three to seven days.

During this process, a strong natural fiber is created, which can then be hand-processed into baskets and other woven home accessories. In this way, the removed water hyacinth gets a new purpose as a raw material.

Experienced artisans carefully process the dried water hyacinth into the round, low shape of the basket.

Soeji states that it collaborates with local production partners who prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced craftsmen.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine production is required.
