The story behind rattan

Rattan is a fast-growing plant-based raw material found in tropical forests.

According to Soeji, rattan grows in large quantities in some areas and can take up a lot of space and nutrients compared to other vegetation. The stems are regularly harvested and, after drying, processed into material for furniture, baskets, and home accessories, among other things.

Rattan is naturally sturdy, yet flexible enough to be hand-processed into various shapes. This makes it particularly suitable for artisanal wickerwork like LIKU.

Handmade in Bali

LIKU is handcrafted in Bali, Indonesia, by a small family business specializing in rattan.

Experienced artisans carefully weave the rattan fibers around the metal frame, gradually building up the round shape of the lampshade.

Soeji states that they work with production partners who prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced craftspeople.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine production is needed.

Due to the use of natural materials and manual manufacturing, small differences in color, structure, shape, and dimensions may occur. These variations are part of LIKU's artisanal character and make each piece unique.
