Light in appearance, sturdy within

Underneath the natural weaving is a sturdy frame of metal tubes. This forms the base of the table and ensures that BAYU remains stable and dimensionally stable.

Experienced craftsmen then hand-weave long, fine strands of rattan around the frame.

The rattan remains as natural as possible. Only a thin, transparent protective layer is applied to protect the material and preserve its beautiful light gold-beige color.

The story behind rattan

Rattan is a rapidly renewable plant-based resource derived from rattan palms that grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia.

According to Soeji, the stems and branches are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried.

Different parts of the plant are then given their own application. The inside of the stems can be processed into material of various thicknesses for furniture, baskets, and lamps, while the outer bark can be cut into finer strips for refined weaving.

Rattan palms need a healthy forest ecosystem to grow well. According to Soeji, the use of rattan can therefore also contribute to making the preservation of natural forests economically attractive.

Approximately two days of handwork

BAYU is handcrafted on Java, Indonesia.

The production process begins with making the metal frame. Then, exceptionally long and thin strands of rattan are woven one by one by hand around the structure.

This requires a lot of patience and precision. According to Soeji, it takes an average of about two days to craft one BAYU side table.

It is precisely this intensive handwork that creates the refined structure and artisanal character of each piece.

Artisanally produced on Java

Soeji states that it collaborates with small family businesses of a maximum of approximately 20 to 30 employees.

During the selection of production partners, attention is paid to fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

Older skilled workers who can no longer work in agriculture can also continue to use their traditional skills within these family businesses and pass them on to the next generation.

Because much of the work is done entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Each BAYU is crafted individually. Small differences in color, structure, shape, and finish are therefore possible and are part of the handmade character of the product.
