Hand-formed from rattan

Sturdy rattan stalks are used for the frame. Rattan is naturally strong, but must first be heated before it is flexible enough to be shaped into BUMI's characteristic curved forms.

Experienced artisans carefully heat and shape the rattan by hand. Then, the individual pieces are arranged around the mirror until the radial design emerges.

This is a time-consuming process where each arch must be individually formed and placed. This gives each BUMI its own subtle character.

The story behind rattan

Rattan is a fast-growing climbing plant found in tropical forests.

According to Soeji, rattan grows so abundantly in some areas that the plant can take up a lot of space and nutrients compared to other vegetation. The stalks can be harvested, dried, and then processed into furniture, baskets, and home accessories, among other things.

Because rattan grows quickly and can be cultivated without chemical additives, it is a widely used natural material for traditional handicrafts.

BUMI is handcrafted in Java, Indonesia.

Soeji states that it works with local producers, paying attention to fair wages and good working conditions. The products are made by adult and experienced artisans.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many production steps are carried out manually, relatively little machine production is required.

Due to the use of natural materials and manual manufacturing, small differences in color, shape and finish may occur. These variations are part of the artisanal character and make each mirror unique.
