Handwoven from raffia

TELU uses raffia, a natural plant fiber derived from the Corypha utan.

This plant is native to the steppe and forest regions of Southeast Asia. Approximately every two years, the plant renews its leaves. The older leaves are collected and then dried in the sun for several days to weeks.

Depending on the desired natural color tone, the dried fibers are then further processed into braiding material.

Raffia feels relatively soft but is also strong and robust. This combination makes the material suitable for use in home accessories like this pouf.

A time-consuming craft

The raffia fibers of TELU are handcrafted by experienced artisans using fine needles.

Due to the large surface area of the pouf and the fine material, the braiding requires a lot of time and precision. The exterior is built up layer by layer until the round shape is completely finished.

The pouf is then filled with a combination of cotton and coconut fibers, creating a soft and comfortable seating option.

Each TELU is individually handcrafted. Small differences in color, shape, texture, and dimensions are therefore possible and are part of the product's natural and artisanal character.

According to Soeji, attention is paid to fair payment and good working conditions when selecting local production partners. The products are manufactured by adult and experienced artisans.

The supplier also states that no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many production steps are performed entirely by hand, relatively little machine production is required.
