Our products are artfully crafted individual pieces. They may vary slightly in size, color, and shape due to manual production and natural variations in materials.

Main materials: seagrass, banana fibers
Our placemats are made from plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural.
What basket weavers commonly refer to as 'seagrass' is actually not an (underwater) plant, but a small, palm-like plant widely found on sandy beaches in tropical Asia. The leaves of the plants, often cultivated by humans, are separated, cut into strips, dried, and then processed by hand.
Banana fibers are the fibers from the layered trunks of banana trees used in agriculture. The intense brown color develops naturally when the fibers are dried in the sun for about a week. Then, the individual strips are rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used for this material. This gives these crops a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for many handmade baskets here at Soeji.
Other materials: nylon thread

Production location:
This placemat is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
In selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact with the companies.

About Soeji
When we came across several small weaving workshops during a stay in Indonesia in the summer of 2019, we quickly recognized the potential of these wonderful products. We started talking to the owners and it became clear that they were interested in realizing our designs.
Since then, we have designed and produced many great products based on traditional patterns, assembled a small but beautiful assortment, and finally made them available to a wider audience in our online shop in June 2020.
For our home and fashion accessories, we only use natural, environmentally friendly materials (which would otherwise often end up in the trash because they are considered waste products or weeds) and the work of experienced Indonesian artisans. Every sale of our handmade products thus sustainably supports rural communities in earning their livelihoods. Especially older people, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit enormously from the jobs created by these workshops.
Thanks to our close cooperation with local small producers without intermediaries and long communication channels, we can guarantee very good working conditions and wages and closely monitor the origin of the raw materials.
A pleasant side effect for you are fair prices, of which you can be sure that a large portion goes to the producers and little to international companies.
