The story behind Trembesi

The frame of SUNDA is made from Trembesi, also known as rain tree or monkey pod wood.

The tree originates from South America but now grows widely in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, Trembesi is planted along roads, in parks, and other urban areas.

To limit the strong growth of these trees, the extensive branches are regularly pruned. According to Soeji, the wood that becomes available is then used for furniture production, among other things.

The Trembesi wood for these products comes from East Java. The wood is hard and robust and has a warm color and grain that somewhat resembles teak.

Natural finish

The Trembesi wood is finished with a transparent protective layer.

This keeps the natural warm brown color and wood grain clearly visible, while simultaneously protecting the surface for daily use.

Due to the natural properties of wood, each SUNDA has its own nuances in color and grain.

Experienced artisans process the Trembesi wood into the sturdy frame and combine this with the hand-woven seat of recycled paper fibers.

Soeji states that it works with local production partners who pay attention to fair wages and good working conditions. The products are manufactured by adult and experienced craftsmen.

According to the supplier, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because many production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine production is required.

Due to the handmade production process and natural materials, small differences in color, wood grain, shape, and finish may occur. These variations make each SUNDA unique.
