Sturdy and airy

On the inside, a metal frame ensures that the basket maintains its characteristic round shape. The sturdy banana fibers are carefully woven and attached around this frame.

Due to the open woven structure, air can circulate easily. This makes PALEM particularly suitable for laundry and other textiles where ventilation is desirable.

From banana plant to handmade basket

The banana fibers used for PALEM come from banana plants in Indonesia.

During growth, the fibrous outer layer of the trunk is released. These fibers are collected and then dried in the sun for about a week. During this natural drying process, the characteristic warm, deep brown color develops.

After drying, the fibers are rolled into sturdy strands about 6 mm thick. Experienced craftsmen then carefully weave these by hand around a specially manufactured metal frame that determines the shape and dimensions of the basket.

The fibers are attached to the frame with transparent nylon thread for extra sturdiness. According to Soeji, it takes an average of about two hours to handcraft one PALEM basket.

Artisanally made in Java

PALEM is handcrafted in the Indonesian province of Central Java.

Soeji collaborates with small family businesses of approximately 20 to 30 employees. When selecting these production partners, the brand pays attention to fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours.

The baskets are made by adult and experienced craftsmen. In this way, older artisans who can no longer work in agriculture can continue to use their traditional skills and pass them on to the next generation.

Because almost all production steps are carried out by hand, relatively little machine energy is required during production.
